Self Storage Pimlico Health and Safety Policy

Self Storage Pimlico is committed to providing a safe, healthy and secure environment for all employees, customers, contractors, and visitors, including those using our facilities for removal, collection and delivery purposes. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risks and maintaining high standards of safety across our storage premises.

Policy Aims and Scope

The aim of this policy is to prevent accidents, injuries and work-related ill health by identifying hazards, assessing risks and implementing appropriate controls. It applies to all areas of our storage facilities, including reception, loading bays, corridors, lifts, stairwells, storage units and any external areas under our control.

This policy covers employees, agency staff, contractors, removal crews, customers and any other visitors who may be affected by our operations. Everyone on site is expected to cooperate with this policy and follow our health and safety rules and procedures.

Management Responsibilities

Senior management at Self Storage Pimlico holds overall responsibility for health and safety across the business. Management will:

Ensure compliance with all relevant health and safety legislation and recognised industry standards. Provide and maintain a safe workplace, safe access and egress, and safe systems of work. Identify hazards and assess associated risks on a regular basis. Provide appropriate information, instruction, supervision and training to staff. Supply and maintain suitable equipment, including handling aids used for moving and storing goods. Review this policy periodically and whenever there are significant changes to operations or to legislation.

Employee Responsibilities

All employees share responsibility for maintaining high health and safety standards. Employees must:

Take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Follow all health and safety procedures and training provided. Use equipment, including trolleys and handling aids, correctly and report any defects immediately. Report accidents, near misses, unsafe conditions or hazards to management without delay. Cooperate with any risk assessments, audits, or investigations.

Customer and Visitor Responsibilities

Customers, removal teams and visitors using our storage facilities must also act safely and responsibly. Everyone on site is required to:

Follow instructions and guidance provided by staff, including signage relating to loading bays, corridors, lifts and emergency exits. Use equipment such as trolleys and pallet trucks only as intended and return them to designated areas after use. Avoid blocking fire exits, walkways, lifts or access routes at any time, including during loading and unloading activities. Comply with our rules on prohibited and restricted items, including hazardous, flammable or illegal goods. Supervise children and vulnerable persons at all times while on site.

Safe Use of Storage Units and Loading Areas

To support safe operations for storage users and removal partners, Self Storage Pimlico implements the following measures:

Clear signage and markings in loading bays, car parks and access roads to manage the safe movement of vehicles and pedestrians. Guidance for customers on safe stacking of goods within units, including weight distribution and avoiding overloading or unstable piles. Restrictions on the use of personal ladders or makeshift platforms that could cause falls. Systems to manage congestion during busy periods, particularly when multiple removal vehicles are present. Adequate lighting in internal and external areas to support visibility and safe navigation.

Manual Handling and Use of Equipment

We recognise the particular risks associated with lifting and moving goods in a storage and removal environment. We will:

Provide suitable handling equipment such as trolleys and ensure they are regularly inspected and maintained. Instruct staff in safe manual handling techniques and encourage the use of mechanical aids whenever possible. Advise customers and removal crews to plan loads carefully, avoid excessive weights and use team lifting where necessary. Remove from service any defective equipment until it has been repaired or replaced.

Fire Safety and Emergency Procedures

Fire safety is a key priority. To minimise fire risk and ensure effective evacuation, Self Storage Pimlico will:

Maintain a clear fire safety plan, including evacuation routes, assembly points and responsibilities. Provide fire detection and alarm systems appropriate to the premises and test them regularly. Keep fire exits and escape routes clear and well signposted at all times. Place clear restrictions on storing flammable, explosive or otherwise hazardous substances. Display emergency instructions prominently so that customers, visitors and removal teams can respond quickly in an emergency.

Hazardous Substances and Prohibited Items

Certain items present significant health and safety risks and are not permitted in our storage units. These include, but are not limited to, explosives, flammable liquids and gases, toxic substances, perishable goods, live animals and any items that are illegal or present unacceptable risk to people or property.

Customers and removal partners are responsible for ensuring that stored goods comply with our conditions of use. Staff will provide guidance where needed and reserve the right to deny storage or request removal of unsafe items.

Accident Reporting and Investigation

All accidents, incidents, injuries and near misses that occur on our premises must be reported to a member of staff as soon as possible. We will:

Record details in an accident log and, where required, report incidents to the relevant authorities. Investigate the causes of accidents and near misses in order to prevent recurrence. Take corrective and preventive actions, which may include changes to procedures, additional training or modifications to the physical environment.

Training, Information and Consultation

Self Storage Pimlico will ensure that employees receive induction and ongoing training relevant to their roles, including health and safety procedures, emergency response and safe use of equipment. Information on site rules and safety expectations is made available to customers, removal companies and contractors when they use our facilities.

We welcome feedback from staff, customers and partners on health and safety matters and will consider reasonable suggestions for improvement.

Policy Review and Continuous Improvement

This Health and Safety Policy will be reviewed regularly to ensure it remains effective, relevant and compliant with current legislation and best practice. Reviews will take account of any incidents, operational changes, new equipment, and feedback from those who use our storage services, including removal specialists operating in the area.

By working together, Self Storage Pimlico, our staff, customers and service partners can maintain a safe, efficient and well-managed storage environment for everyone.
